Chris Pureka (they/them) is a Portland, OR based singer-songwriter and touring musician who has blended folk, Americana, and indie rock over their 25-year career. Over that time, Pureka has shared stages with renowned artists including The Lumineers, Andrea Gibson, Gregory Alan Isakov, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, Damien Jurado, and The Cowboy Junkies. Their songs have appeared on several television shows including Shameless and A Million Little Things, as well as in the Sundance-featured indie film, The Royal Road.

Known for lyric-driven, emotionally precise songwriting rooted in what they call “hopeful melancholy,” Pureka creates songs that are tender yet grounded. Pureka has built a body of work that includes five full-length albums, three EPs, and more than 1,000 live performances in over 10 countries. Truly independent, Pureka has sold over 50,000 albums through their own label, Sad Rabbit Records, cultivating a devoted following through extensive touring, deeply personal songwriting, and a steadfast commitment to artistic autonomy.

Pureka’s recent single, “Our Hands” (2026), reflects their continued commitment to both the personal and the political. They describe it as “a tiny roadmap; a humble offering—imperfect advice on how to move through this time of violence and fascism toward something better. A call to plant some seeds and dream some beautiful dreams about what our future can be.”

Originally from Connecticut, Pureka began writing songs at 16 while navigating questions of queer identity and belonging. They embarked on their first national tour at the young age of 21, opening for feminist spoken word artist, Alix Olson at venues large and small all over the US. After landing in Northampton in 2002, they spent their 20’s immersed in the New England folk music scene, before eventually heading west in 2013 to land in Portland, OR, where they currently reside.

With a background in biology and an affinity for bucolic landscapes, Pureka’s songwriting is steeped in the natural world. Their work threads vivid imagery of place through themes of love, loss, and resilience. As they put it: “My work is rooted in the natural world—seeking to evoke and reflect. As I push at the edges of experience, whether sharing live music or writing from my own small corner, I hope we meet there: connected, changed, and maybe even a little healed.”

A significant creative touchstone is Pureka’s personal connection with the late poet, Andrea Gibson. The two met in 2005 while sharing a bill and went on to become close friends and creative collaborators over many years. In 2020, Gibson sent Pureka lyrics they hoped would become a song—words reflecting on leaving this world and their gratitude for the love they had known. That song, Hold Down The Fort, was released in 2025 just after Gibson’s passing from ovarian cancer. The song stands as a poignant offering of love, gratitude, and remembrance, resonating deeply with those who knew and were moved by Gibson’s work.
