Wallie the Sensei

Wallie the Sensei is an artist from Compton, California, whose blend of melodic lyricism and lived-experience storytelling has turned him into a distinctive voice of the West Coast. He gained initial recognition in 2019 when a spur-of-the-moment mixtape, recorded after losing a bet with a friend, produced the single “Scandalous”, which spread quickly online, racking up 12M+ streams and a subsequent remix with Detroit star 42 Dugg.

In 2021, after months of releasing one-off singles, he followed up with “03 Flow” (47M+ streams), his most-streamed single to date, recorded after a 26-hour drive from Alabama to Los Angeles, and inspired in part by Southern California figure 03 Greedo, who was incarcerated at the time. After releasing his debut album GOLDEN CHILD in 2021 and its 2022 follow-up HERE 2 STAY, he attracted the attention of hometown hero Kendrick Lamar, who invited him into studio sessions, eventually landing as a feature on “dodger blue” off 2024’s 2x RIAA Platinum-certified project GNX. He also caught the ear of Travis Scott, who, after linking for a studio session in Miami, signed him to his Cactus Jack Records imprint earlier this year, joining a roster of artists that already includes Don Toliver, Sheck Wes, Chase B, SoFaygo, and Luxury Tax.

Raised in Compton, Wallie the Sensei was immersed in music early on in life. He sang soprano in his church choir at his grandmother’s urging and absorbed the R&B and soul records that his mother played around the house, from the funk-driven sounds of The Isley Brothers to the post-disco records of Shalamar. As a teenager, he began to gravitate toward hip-hop, drawing from Lil Wayne, T-Pain, and melodic Los Angeles artists like Ty Dolla $ign and Roddy Ricch, who showed him how singing and rapping could intertwine. Though devoted to sports, freestyling with friends became a creative outlet until a lost bet pushed him to make a record. After losing the wager, he spent two days in the studio making his first project No Love, a six-track EP that included the local hit “Scandalous” (12M+ streams).

From 2019 onward, he recorded daily, teaching himself song structure and moving from long, unpolished tracks to concise, melody-driven records. Support from the late Nebula Swavey, with whom he recorded tracks like “Silly Rabbit”, guided his early steps. The deaths of close friends during this period pushed him deeper into the studio, where a freestyle-based method became his primary process: melody first (often humming or whistling), then words, captured in real time. This instinct-led approach paved the way for a catalog that spans anthems and piano-first ballads, and for the emergence of his distinct sonic identity on GOLDEN CHILD and HERE 2 STAY.

Wallie the Sensei’s decision to relocate to Miami in 2022 marked a new stage, giving him space to focus entirely on recording. Even as his profile grew nationally, he stayed connected to Compton, remaining active in his community through initiatives such as Wallie’s Weekend, which offers resources and mentorship to local youth.

His forthcoming major-label debut, Mad Dogg (short for “Managing Angry Demons, Deprived of God’s Grace”), was assembled quickly (the first version in roughly 60 days) and refined over the following year to find the right balance. The project reflects his aim to serve core fans while simultaneously welcoming new listeners drawn through Cactus Jack, with contributions from a diverse feature list that includes Ty Dolla $ign, Blxst, Don Toliver, OhGeesy, Roddy Ricch, and YTB Fatt, alongside production from Southside, Mustard, and others.

Tracks mirror Wallie’s expansion from regional gem to worldwide superstar, ranging from club-ready anthems (“Dip”) to reflective cuts (“On My Heart”), culminating in a project that, at its core, is impossible to put in a box. With the release of his major-label debut Mad Dogg, Wallie the Sensei is effectively transitioning from an emerging regional presence to a nationally recognized artist positioned to bring the new West Coast sound to the masses.
