Announcing Heron Oblivion & Big Thief As Our Latest Roster Additions

Posted 12/09/2015

We’re excited to announce two wonderful, new additions to the Ground Control Touring roster: Heron Oblivion & Big Thief

San Francisco’s Heron Oblivion features Meg Baird (Espers), Noel Von Harmonson (Comets on Fire, Six Organs of Admittance, Sic Alps, The Lowdown), Ethan Miller (Comets on Fire, Howlin’ Rain, Feral Ohms), and Charlie Saufley (Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound).

Heron Oblivion’s origins date to 2013 in SF’s Bayview district, where its four members – fueled by a love of 60s/70s scuzz and commune jams, folk rock, noise, and P.S.F. Japanese underground — would gather for what Miller describes as “blistering, extended free jam sessions.” The four musicians realized that their initial chemistry was undeniable and their vision unified.

Ultimately, Heron Oblivion fused song craft to improvisational leanings. What materialized is a mesmeric compilation of English folk rock and earthy West Coast psychedelia spiked with feedback and explosive dissonant elements. Sub Pop will release Heron Oblivion’s debut record Spring 2016.

Stay tuned to their artist page for news and 2016 tour dates.

Brooklyn’s Big Thief emerges with lilting narratives and twisted, fuzzy guitars, surrounding a heart of song. Their current video/single, “Masterpiece,” embodies a visceral turn in Adrianne Lenker’s writing toward something heavier, cabalistic in both its darkest and most tender moments – a contrast to her 2013 solo LP, Hours Were The Birds, and her 2014 duo EPs with Buck Meek, a-sides and b-sides. Now, with Meek on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums, Big Thief looks forward to the release of their first full-length recordings, now in production.
